The Dutch cabinet has backed a proposal by the country's immigration minister to ban Muslim women from wearing the burqa in public places.

The burqa, a full body covering that also obscures the face, would be banned by law in the street, in schools, while travelling on buses and trains and the in the law courts.

The Dutch cabinet said burqas disturb public order, citizens and safety.

Would it ever happen here? Ze Dutch are some of the most liberal people in the world so something must have annoyed them.

Not quite true Rorts. They may well be liberal when it comes to drug use, but, not when it comes to race issues - very strong far right movement in Holland.

I stand corrected. Perhaps they are trying to ban it because of Muslim attitudes to drugs?

Some time ago the french banned the wearing of religious articles/clothes in all state schools. Again a country with a strong far right movement.

In fact most european countries have stron far right movements, the notable exceptions being us and Germany - and in both of these the movement is growing.

Germany had a strong far right movement 65 years ago, the rest of the countries are simply aftertiming.

Again, they weren't on their own.

The right dominated in Italy, Spain, france, Finland, Holland even then and don't forget our very own Oswald Moseley.

They didn't dominate very well though!

Someone must have gubbed them, and there was a lot of aftertiming going on at the time.
