It was the right pixel size (120x120) but was over the kb size (size on disk) limit - if there was no limit then people could use huge images and eat up bandwidth.
So I saved it as a .jpeg instead of a .gif as jpeg compression is far more effective.
/tech speak over.
Or I could have just prayed to the Mushroom gods.
